NEW PUBLICATION! Now inviting comment.

We are inviting feedback from tech builders—whether in commercial tech, non-profit, or open-source spaces—on our new guide, Design from the Margins: A Methodology to De-weaponize Tech.

It offers a short outline of the Design from the Margins (DFM) framework and is designed for those committed to creating just, and rights-protective technologies that resist being weaponized for surveillance, policing, or harm.

We are publishing this shortened version as we continue to develop additional resources, in hopes of sparking a consultative process.

We particularly want your comments on:

  • How the strategies outlined in the document can be clarified or adjusted to better support teams in implementing them

  • What kinds of case studies, real-world implementations, or human rights documentation evidence you would like to see more of, and where you need greater clarity

  • Specific areas or topics in the tech design and development process that should be added to the guide

We also want your advice on:

  • What subtle, stealthy, or strategic approaches can help prioritize these methods in the face of growing pushbacks against human rights-focused tech work

  • What ways we can present concepts or ideas for the people you want to share, push, or teach DFM to

Please send any feedback directly to contact@de-center.net or use the contact form on this site. We hope to collect comments by mid-March. Also be in touch for an alternative stealthy cover of the report for those working under scrutiny titled DFM: Methodology for Building Robust Tech.

The De|Center will continue to publish additional more in-depth materials providing more specific guidance, case studies, and tech-facilitated abuse documentation.
